Saffire After Dark is an intimate, hour‑long stargazing encounter that offers a quiet, transformative connection with the cosmos. Here, unhurried storytelling meets thoughtful, expertly guided astronomy beneath the clearest skies in the Southern Hemisphere.
Timed before dinner in winter or after dinner in summer, our newly curated Saffire After Dark Experience, honours both season and sky. The open‑air sanctuary is framed with gentle lighting that glows softly against the landscape; seating is comfortable and cocooning, with discreet heating that folds you into the night. The soundtrack is wind and wildlife.
Guided by our expert astronomers, guests first learn about – and touch – a rare collection of meteorites, including pieces of the moon and mars, before moving to a bespoke seated stargazing platform: an intimate, sunken sanctuary shaped in stone and timber, designed to feel both quietly private and warmly welcoming. A hot chocolate or slow Tasmanian spirit warms your hands. Cosy. Still. A quiet breath together… and the night begins.
Gently guided and thoughtfully paced, Saffire After Dark unfolds in three stages. It starts with a naked‑eye orientation beneath Tasmania’s dark southern sky, helping guests find their bearings through familiar constellations and celestial markers. From there, the experience deepens into a telescope‑led exploration, with two high‑powered instruments revealing stellar nurseries, star clusters, distant galaxies, and the delicate remnants of dying suns – a clear journey through the life cycle of stars.
As the telescopes sweep the sky, each view is captured through advanced imaging systems that reveal colour and detail not visible to the naked eye. These images – often unforgettable in their vibrancy and scale – are then sent to guests’ phones or devices, a keepsake that allows the night sky to travel home with them, and a vivid reminder of their Saffire After Dark experience.
The night concludes with the guide bringing the cosmos back to human scale through conversation and simple, intuitive storytelling.
